How to Get Thousands of Fans Fast!

January 11, 2012

Why Would You Do This?

In the beginning you might feel such pressure to get started that you think it is better to go out and LIKE everyone, especially on Twitter… Some people even pay money to gather thousands of fans…Trust me, with social media more friends is not better. Face it, if you have ten thousand fans you could not possibly talk to them and build any relationships.

A Few Simple Rules

  • This is not a popularity race
  • If you start slow you can manage businesses and comments as you learn
  • Start with businesses where you spend your money all year-long
  • Your favorite parks
  • Consider your volunteer work
  • Your children’s sport teams
  • Your extra curricular activities – bird watching, running groups
  • Your municipality
  • Tourism
  • Local papers

The suggestions could really be endless – I recommend 25 new follows on Twitter every other day, try using the search field by adding your city…such as Nanaimo or Whistler. Sometimes you can find people to follow that have created lists and one might be of your city…It might say people who live in Nanaimo or in my case I just have Nanaimo.

On Facebook you need to go out and LIKE other Business Pages, because Facebook Business Pages cannot LIKE people. A quick way to grab a few local pages is to find a local Business and look at “ALL” their LIKEs. I will show you how to do this in the following video.

The Goal

If we remember anything about social media it should be that we are here to create and nurture relationships by being active in our news feed (Home). It is through commenting and time that these relationships will grow – just like in life. You will also create more followers on your page through the pages you have liked and the people who follow those pages as well by commenting. Friends of friends… that is a tough one to write.. you should read it a couple of times.

Think of your social media like a community garden that takes everyone’s commitment and time to grow and prosper.

Just 15 minutes a day is all you really need to spend on social media, but if you spend more than that it doesn’t hurt you…

Cheers!

How to Understand the Value of your Facebook Insights

Facebook Insights

Facebook has really improved how we can understand the interaction or activity that is taking place on our Facebook Business Page… Sometime it can seem like we are doing a lot of work and no one is listening. Those feelings while understandable can now be validated through Facebook Insights.

To have the Insights view button you must have at least 30 LIKES from people (Personal Profile) on your Facebook Business Page. Businesses Pages that LIKE you, do not count…nor do they count as Fans….but they are very important!

Facebook Insights

  • The Insights dashboard gives you an in-depth look into your content posting
  • Page views
  • Tab views
  • External references
  • Media Consumption
  • Geographical – gender specific – age – countries – cities – language

For me the most valuable button that is not ego centric would be the Interactions Tab which talks specifically about my postings and the response, impressions and feedback it generated…

Why this is so important is because it allows you to curb, change or increase popular posts,,,the insights give you the response that post generated, giving you clear measurable information… especially if you are passing it along to the big guy.

I should add that knowing the cities my viewers live in is very important for my business… Having Facebook confirm viewers from : Nanaimo, Vancouver, Whistler, Port Coquitlam and Victoria let’s me know my reach is far greater than with my print advertising. This is incredible exposure – oh and it’s Free for right now.

The following video takes you through my Facebook Business Page Insights Tab…

Cheers!

How Many Posts a Day Should You Do On Facebook?

Tortoise and the Hare - Social Media

Is Less more?

We all learn through trial and error, although asking questions along the way would seem extremely beneficial as social media evolves. In my case I am teaching people how to use social media to compliment other marketing initiatives to help keep their name and company top of mind for potential clients….. It is a gradual start for everyone, my Business Page usually feeds into my clients news feed on their Business Page or even their personal profile news feed as a way for them to keep updated with the changing world of social media… Please don’t mistake this for my postings feeding into their postings… this does not happen unless I was to post directly onto their page… I don’t recommend doing this as you’ll probably end up being blocked by that page as SPAM.

Keep It Simple Social Media Facebook Business Page

If I was posting every hour or five times a day on my own business page… this would take up a lot of space on anyone who was following me if they had a new business page. Therefore if I was posting enormous amounts of material it would seem a little too much for most people.

I know this myself first hand because I get too many postings from some of the pages I have liked. It comes down to a fine balancing act. Look at who likes your Business Page and ask them – what is a comfortable number of posts from my business onto your news feed? You might also ask yourself if all the postings you are doing add any benefit or value to your readers… otherwise it is known as more White Noise.

I feel comfortable with one to three posts a day… Some of my friends have said they only post once every other day.

Sometimes too much is just that, too much, do you think this is annoying as well? From what I’ve been told it certainly can be. Common sense and an understanding that we can only read so many postings in a day… short and sweet will win the race. Think… “The Tortoise and the Hare”

Let me know what you think – and let me know other areas in social media you struggle with – I’ll write about it.

Cheers!

Congratulations You’re Engaged w/ Social Media

Are You Really?

How Do You Know?

With yesterdays Social Media Tip of the Day I thought you might want a little more information.. Then again a little knowledge sometimes is dangerous… Let’s step out on the limb a little…thats where all the fruit grows..

Being connected on social media with Twitter, Facebook and all the other options there are…does not make you sucessful…that would be a destination… Social Media is a journey.

It is through engagement and time that you and your company become engrained in your followers minds…Consistancy is only one answer. You must communicate with your little village of like-minded people…If they didn’t like something about you or your news feeds they wouldn’t spend their time reading your posts…. right?

It is very important that you like other business pages and read their posts and comment when you feel its right. You cannot just simply click the like button…all the time.

Remember if your community is like-minded they probably would appreciate the vast knowledge you have in your field of ability… but beyond your work you are a person of many talents and life experiences.. You might be an avid bird watcher, belong to a wine group, reading club, golf, runner or jump from airoplanes…your work is an extension of who you are…this is “SOCIAL” media… let’s bring a little social into our posts…

I personally love doing small one minute videos of my awesome runs or walks along the ocean..or to let you know of a hidden treasure in Whistler or Nanaimo… I use to write on my blog about the birds along the ocean in Victoria.

Tips, tricks, recipes, Top 10 and other ideas are part of creating engagment…yes your business is separate from your life… (in one small way) but we are not on social media to sell our product….all the time, we are here to engage and create a community through giving and sharing… to keep our business and name top of mind to our readers…for when they need your product or service..

Be fun, be interesting and throw in a few laughs a long the way… that doesn’t make you a bad person…it makes you real… and we all need and love to laugh…

Here is another very important tip: If you create a business page out of your personal profile…NO other business page can like you… that limits your ability to use the cross-pollination of viral marketing…

Cheers!
