How It Works – Facebook 101

It is really a matter of getting yourself out there…everywhere. You might be finding it difficult to be on all networks all the time or even a few times a week. This is why it is very important if you are just starting out to pick ONE social network and dive in, take some training, give it the time everyday that it needs and most importantly learn how to ask people to FOLLOW you.

Being proud of your social network will make it far more easier and likely that people will recommend you. Once they get to your site you’ll need to give them a reason to stay connected with you…. There are far to many pages or accounts to follow to end up listening to anyone who is boring or repeating what they already know.

Today we’ll talk about Facebook and the power behind you helping others to win this game of social. Once you have created a captivating Business Page that is rich with valuable information and excellent graphics it’s time to build your Chamber of Commerce. A business page can only LIKE and mention other business pages. Even when you want to thank people for coming to your page and liking it – you can only write a post and thank them – you cannot send them a direct message or pull their name into your feed by tagging them….

So how is it you make this page more engaging and lively? I am finding Facebook more and more amazing every week… Facebook is forcing us to get outside and become connected… not just on-line. You need to be going into these businesses or organizations and participating in order to get ammunition to post about – yes, you need to be physically going places to win the engagement war. My good friend Carolyn Hill at The Whistler Real Estate Company (Facebook) and my sister Cathie from Go Cat Go Cleaning (Twitter) are two shinning examples of honestly thanking and tagging businesses when they’re out and about – excellent job ladies!!

Restaurants, gyms, yoga and Farmers markets are great examples of places we can go and then @ mention them on our Facebook Pages – but don’t get me wrong, this also has to be sincere. If you go around @mentioning & tagging people and businesses without actually having reason or worse not even utilizing their services… you will be frowned upon and possibly flagged as SPAM…

It is my biggest recommendation to work with another business or two together on each of your Facebook Pages… and this week I am going to run an example of exactly what I am talking about on my business page “Keep It Simple Social Media”. The businesses that I choose will be paying me nothing, and that is what you’d expect to have an honest playing field….Just copy what I do only pick your own businesses!

On a side note, you might love a particular business that is not on Facebook or they have a page and do not understand how to use it effectively and when you spend time visiting the page it gives you no strategic benefit – talk to these business owners or recommend a social media course… If pages have no followers or no one is “Talking About” their page you need to move on and find the people who are putting in the time. That which we do not use – we lose….

Social Media Marketing takes time to build and is very important today that you lead a good example – very soon people will be looking for successful pages to follow – in order for them to cross-pollinate with you…success breeds success, has never meant more to me than it does today….

If you have a product or valuable message and no one is following you – who do you think gets this posting when you make it? Get busy and get your Business Page Name out there… Build and nurture your community and shake hands in public places and ask “Do You Have Facebook Business Page I Could LIKE?”

A New Way to Say Thank You ♥

The Doors are open!

There is a new way of saying thank you to the businesses where you spend your time and money….and that new way is on-line through social media sites…. Facebook and Twitter are easy examples of quickly letting the world know how pleased you are with service, food and quality of products…not to mention favorite parks, events and people….On Twitter this is called a mention by adding the Twitter handle of the business or person @KeepItSimpleSM and on Facebook you also use the @Keep It Simple Social Media

One of my favorite things to do is send a Tweet right from the restaurant I am having dinner at with an awesome photo of the artful display the chef presents…The ultimate in compliments…and promotion for that establishment.

Yes we know it is also easy to defame someone on-line too, but for the purspose of this article I am going to stick with the theme…How to say thank you on-line…

Blogging is a larger version of the thank you

My good friend and student of social media Carolyn Hill asked me the other day to give her some ideas about what she could blog about….now Carolyn is one lucky girl she lives in the mecca of resources for blogging.. WHISTLER… and todays blog is dedicated to all my Whistler social media students…I will start with ideas for real estate and then I will finish with ideas for restaurants…for Keeley from La Rua and Caramba if you’re reading this blog and feel left out just go to my Facebook Business Page and ask me to write something for you…. I’d love to.

Real Estate Ideas

  • First think Life style – people are buying real estate mostly for what Whistler offers
  • Write about the different restaurants – one at a time – as you experience them
  • The Five different Golf Courses – How to and Tips
  • How about each area or sub-divison
  • Show Case a Builder of the week
  • A day in the life of the Ski-hill or Ski Instructor
  • How about the Non-Skier – what can they do?
  • The recreation center – or other gym facilities
  • A walk along the village stroll
  • Write about an athelete or retired citizen
  • Write a story about the municiple hall / Whistler/Blackcomb
  • Emergency services – The local Police – other heros
  • Your company
  • Your personal experience as a local
  • Write about Whistler pit falls
  • Local camp grounds
  • Things for kids to do
  • Show the world how friendly everyone in Whistler is through Video interviews
  • The trails – Hiking – Biking – Cross-country
  • I’m sure by now you’ve come up with a few ideas of your own, another fun idea would be to get together with a few friends and talk about ideas to blog about, and ask people and places if you can write a story…they would love and appreciate the publicty – work together as a community, it helps inform the tourist and shows you are open minded and care about each other. You see social media works much better if you help one another … it is also much more fun! (as a side note the blog I wrote about Whistler marijuana has been my most read blog!)

      • I hope these ideas spur you on to start writing passionately about your profession or establishment, I can think of many people I know who hesitated at first to write a blog and now absolutely love writing…it’s fun and a great way to say thank you to the people and businesses that have helped you along your journey to success.

Who should set up the account?

Today’s Social Media Tip comes from my old stomping ground in Coquitlam BC and a fellow colleague in Real Estate Ray Harris with The Harris Johnson Real Estate Team. Thank you for the great question Ray.

While having hundreds of friends on your personal account is a huge bonus for you…especially when it comes to marketing your Facebook Business Page.. not creating a Business Page and running a Business through your personal profile is problematic… so I am happy you now have one.. Business pages are ranked by Facebook on content and engagement… It’s known as having Edge Rank… Another important fact is without a Business Page you cannot cross-pollinate with other businesses surrounding you… it works much like referrals do…

But who should set up the page and be in control?

It’s tricky isn’t it? The reason I say this is just yesterday I met another client who had a page and now it’s gone… or the person who opened it is gone… with it.

You can change the Page ownership and remove yourself in a few easy steps… however you need be an administrator before the person leaves… unless of course it was a happy goodbye.

Facebook allows you to transfer Page Ownership and Admin

This is how it works

  • You must have a personal Facebook Account to create a Facebook Business Page
  • You can assign anyone to be an administrator for that page if you are friends on your personal profile
  • Page admins can invite their friends to LIKE your Page from their personal account
  • Page admins can view Insights (metrics for performance and data collection)
  • Page Insights only work after you have 30 LIKES (People)

Recommendations

We never know today where we’ll actually be in 3 years from now, but in three years if you work consistently and diligently on your Facebook Business Page you could have thousands of followers and enough material to write a book…. Lets just say what if.. the person who opened your Facebook Business Page leaves the company or gets transferred with their spouse… worse yet – fired or they die?… yikes.. I have heard of families that request Facebook to close their loved ones accounts when this happens…

As the owner of the company it is our responsibility to understand the marketing initiatives and the pit falls of each decision we make. You don’t even need a Facebook presence to have a Facebook Business Page… but at least you’ll own the page when one is created… Just saying… it happens…

Facebook Business Pages are really just starting to take off, so why not spend half a day taking a clinic.. understanding how it works and then hand it off to your admin….wife or children to keep it going strong.

If you need to switch admins or become the page owner why not “Just Do It”… Once this is accomplished re-assign the admin position… it’s easy..

The main point of this blog is you need to be in control of the wheel if you are driving the car… Everyone else just washes the car and gasses it up for you…Making you efficient, looking fabulous and staying top of mind for future clients…
