The Countdown to Whistler 2010 Olympics Things you need to know!

As I am leaving for Whistler tomorrow I thought I would pass along some very helpful information I received in an e-mail from my good friend Lennox. Starting Thursday February 11th, 2010 from 6am – 6pm you will need your driving permit to get past Alice Lake on your way to Whistler for the 2010 Olympics…. (5 km past Squamish) Here is a picture of both sides of the permit.

You will need a place to park your vehicle as there is very limited parking available anywhere in Whistler – as my earlier blog stated.

 Highway 99

I don’t think that the 100 miles an hour in the picture will pass. You will need to pay special attention to the new speeds along Highway 99, what was once 90km is now 70km in many areas. In Whistler the speed limited is now posted as 50km. There will be a number of police check points and apparently massive amounts of radar! Take your time and enjoy the journey. It might be nice to pull off at one or two of the many new view areas.

The Sea to Sky highway improvement project have created a three lane scenario which is much like the Lions Gate bridge – it changes with the rush hour.

There are literally thousands of pilons along the highway that you need to drive through and it is a little more difficult once the sun goes down – driving with extreme caution is advised. Don’t forget to fill your gas tank in Squamish. (Use the bathroom)

Things to Remember

Meadow Park Sports Center will be open  from 6am – 10pm seven days a week during the Olympics. Note that the parking lot has a three-hour limit that will be monitored. Have patience while at the gym, it might get really busy with all the extra force in town. (Police, Army, Security)

On a happier note the liquor store will be open on Sundays!!!!

Bring your own stamps – A few rolls of toonies and loonies for the bus ($2) – Comfortable walking shoes – Dress in layers – bring business cards  – a camera – I suggest food, blankets, & toilet paper for in the car

And never ever leave home without your positive attitude!

Follow my blog/Twitter/Facebook/LinkedIn – about all the up-to-date excitement in Whistler during the 2010 Olympics.

Drop by the Whistler Canada House (Whistler Library) and say hello, I’ll be a little hard to find – I’m working undercover remember…..

Cheers!      [tweetmeme source=whistlerheather only_single=false]

Thanks for the information. I travel up there tomorrow to meet my Valentine for dinner Saturday. It will be a great trip and I get to see the Olympics too as a bonus. Keep up the great work.
